ย “For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 2:17 KJV
Men have walked this earth who manifested the character of God to perfection. Noah was described as perfect by God (Genesis 6:9), and so was Job (Job 1:1). From the narrative of scriptures, we understand that Abraham (Genesis 17:1) and Apostle Paul also attained perfection of their character (Philippians 3:12-14). What was their secret?
The key to attaining perfection of character was revealed when God appeared to Abraham and told him “…walk before me, and be thou perfect” (Genesis 17:1). Therefore, walking before God is how one attains perfection of character. This was what was said of Noah, when the Bible recorded that “…Noah walked with God” (Genesis 6:9). Enoch was also revealed to have walked with God (Genesis 5:24).
Walking before God is an act of faith, where we intentionally see God watching us; it’s the practice of the consciousness of God by beholding Him with the eyes of faith. This was what was at play when Joseph said no to Potiphar’s wife’s offer of sex, though no one was there, for he said “…how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9), indicating that he saw God with Him.
Sin flourishes in the dark, but when we walk in the consciousness of God by beholding Him with the eyes of faith, we are walking in the light (1 John 1:7). When Apostle Paul had the need to tell his audience that he and his team were speaking the word truthfully, he said “…in the sight of God speak we in Christ” (2 Corinthians 2:17 KJV), indicating that they were beholding God while preaching the Gospel, which helped them to say that which is true only.
As we see God with the eyes of faith, grace is given to us to yield in obedience to Him and depart from sin, resulting in the perfection of our character.
