And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spiritย โญโญEphesiansโฌ โญ5:18 KJVโฌโฌ
The power to manifest the Christian life is the person of the Holy Spirit Himself, and it is God’s will for our vessels to be filled with Him. The infilling of the Holy Spirit is not a one-time experience as many assume, but an experience that is continuous. When our vessel is filled and overflowing with the person of the Holy Spirit, demonstrating Christ becomes easy.
The first time after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ the disciples received the Holy Spirit was recorded in John 20:22 when Jesus Christ breathed on them and said “Receive the Holy Spirit”. Despite this instance, the disciples received another dimension of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended with a mighty rushing wind (Acts 2:1-4). Scriptures recorded that the disciples were filled in with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues after the experience (Acts 2:4). Yet again, we notice another instance where the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit, this was recorded in Acts 4:31 after the disciples met to pray for the boldness to preach the Gospel. From these, we can see that the infilling of the Holy Spirit is not a one-time occurrence, and for this reason, scriptures admonished us not to “be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit (Eph. 5:18)”. For a drunkard to stay drunk, he doesn’t depend on yesterday’s highness, but has to stay high by filling himself up with wine. In like manner, for us to stay filled with the Holy Spirit, we shouldn’t depend on our last experience, but we must stay filled each day.
How do we stay continually filled with the Holy Spirit? The first thing to do is to make music. The scriptures say “โญโญSpeaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord (Eph 5:19 NKJV)”. When we have songs in our hearts for others and the Lord, our capacity is increased to receive more of Him. Also, the scriptures went on to say “โญโญgiving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Eph. 5:20)”. As we stay thankful, more of Him is given to us. Again, He fills us with Himselfย when we submit to one another in the fear of God (Eph 5:21).
Finally, congregational prayer attracts the outpouring of the spirit, as experienced in Acts 4, where the disciples were filled with the spirit during a joint prayer session.
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us to be filled with the spirit at all times.
