Title: Belief and Works

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. John 14:12 KJV
Yesterday’s Call To Prayer reminded us to not fool ourselves by claiming to have faith in Jesus while remaining disobedient to the instructions of God. Nonetheless, there is a system of belief that causes works that God has put in place. And I would like us to understand this system.
There is a reason why at one time Jesus mentions only believing in Him as the way to eternal life (John 3:16) and at other times he mentions works; 21ย โNot everyone who says to me, โLord, Lord,โ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven ย Mathew 7: 21 . That’s because they are the same thing, the former is the source, the latter is the evidence. In God’s design, He knows that when you truly believe you will do something, it might not be 100 but at least it will be 50 or 30 (Matthew 13:8).
Belief does not equal obedience. But belief or faith is what empowers you to obey. For instance, if I say to you: there is a snake there, do not cross! If you believe me you will most likely not cross but if you don’t then you will cross. Even when it is pride that causes you to cross, in the background what has happened is that, in pride, you decided not to believe and hence crossed. So in effect, you need to suppress belief in order to disobey. This suppression takes the form of excuses or new beliefs contrary to the word of God.
Obedience is a consequence of Faith. In other words, obedience is a fruit of faith. Faith in God’s word would make you want to obey. Again, Faith in God’s word would make you pray for God’s help to obey. The Bible says “The righteous shall live by faith” Romans 1:17. Therefore our primary attention should be on sustaining and building our faith. We know that faith comes through hearing the word of God constantly. Faith also comes through praying in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:4). ย With a strong and healthy faith, obedience becomes ABC because faith is the engine or power that drives obedience.
Prayer Points:ย
Let’s thank God for this word today. May God help us to build our faith through the continual hearing of the word of God and our private prayers.
