29ย Then Jesus told him, โBecause you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.โย ย John 20:29
In the previous verses before the opening verse, Jesus had appeared to the Disciples behind closed doors but John was absent and when the disciples tried to convince him that they had all seen the Lord he refused to believe and retorted โUnless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.โ.
The reason why I say he refused to believe is that there was convincing evidence. Mary Magdalene had already told them that she had seen Jesus alive, and now all his brothers in the Lord were telling him the same, and yet, he still didnโt believe. This was not a lack of evidence; it was stubbornness.ย
Thomas (Aramaic) was also known asย Didymus (Greek), and both mean twin. Twins may look identical, but they are not the same. Two persons, Evidence and Doubts, both looking convincing but not the same. It reminds me of a double-minded person as described in James 1:6-8.
6ย But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7ย That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8ย Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.
Beloved, there would always be reasons to doubt the existence of God, the love of God, the presence of God, etc, but what about the evidence? Did you just believe because you just wanted to believe? I bet NO, there is evidence, despite unanswered questions or mysteries, at least you saw the evidence. You tell me, how did 12 men, that is, the apostles and more, go out of their way to spread the message of Jesus Christ, even to the point of dying rather than deny their faith? For what gain?
We believe because we choose to accept the evidence. Like Abraham, we believe because we have experienced God. Thatโs why we can believe that what He says will happen.ย
Believing, therefore, is a matter of being wise enough to look at the evidence without bias. Also, from what the bible says in John 3:19, you see that evil intentions can blind you from seeing the evidence at hand and therefore choose to focus on the doubts.
The bible says without faith it is impossible to please God, but God has not left us without sufficient reasons to believe.
Like Thomas, we may be missing out on Godโs best because we are refusing to acknowledge the evidence before our eyes, waiting for that 100% clearance.
In conclusion, by studying the word of God, we continue to see more and more evidence to believe.
Prayer Point:ย
- Let’s thank God for this word today.
- Let us pray for God to purify our hearts so that we can see and believe Him.
