When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, โTell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?โ โLet me inherit a double portion of your spirit,โ Elisha replied. ย 2 Kings 2:9 NIV
The anointing for service is a supernatural empowerment that comes upon an individual to carry out a specific task. When one is anointed by God, he or she is endued with supernatural strength to do that which he or she has been called to do. God anoints in different ways, forms, and for different purposes. Like the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we can covet the anointing in the lives of others.
Elisha coveted the anointing upon the life of Elijah and he received a double portion of it just when Elijah was taken up by God (2 Kings 2:9-15). After this encounter, Elisha went on to perform miracles as Elijah did, and when counted, he performed twice as many miracles as Elijah did before he was taken by God. Therefore, both Elijah and Elisha operated in a similar anointing, and Elisha was even more anointed than Elijah for he received a double portion of his spirit.
However, when you compare the life of both Elijah and Elisha, you will notice that there were certain dimensions Elijah accessed that Elisha didn’t access, despite being more anointed. For example, Elijah didn’t experience death while Elisha died and was buried (2 Kings 13:20-21). Also, Elijah was recorded to have communicated with God face to face, similar to how Moses communicated with God (Exodus 33:11, 1 Kings 19:9-18) but nothing of such was recorded of Elisha. The reason Elijah accessed these dimensions was because of his deep relationship with God.
The anointing can be transferred from one to another, but a relationship with God cannot be transferred, for it must be developed individually. It is possible to be anointed but unknown by God (See Matthew 7:22-23). The devil is anointed (Jude 1:9, Ezekiel 28:14-19), yet he opposes God. This means that being anointed by God doesn’t mean you are accepted by God. Therefore, we shouldn’t just seek to be anointed, we should seek to have a deep, intimate relationship with God.
Having a relationship with God goes beyond spending time reading the Word and praying, it includes practicing the Word in a persistent manner. This was how Elijah accessed immortality, for Scripture says “To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life” (Romans 2:7 NIV).
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help each member of the body of Christ to develop a deeply intimate relationship with Him.
