Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ Matthew 7:22-23
Last year, I met a particular man of God. Before meeting him in person, I had heard and seen the great exploits he was doing in the kingdom. Truly, I was very excited to meet him in person because I admired the anointing upon his life.
However, after two meetings with him, I said to myself, “I do not want to be like this man.”
God anoints us for that which He has called us to do. This anointing imparts in us the supernatural ability to do things not humanly possible. The anointing is a gift, and as we were admonished in the scriptures, we should earnestly covet it (1 Corinthians 12:31, 1 Corinthians 14:1). However, it is possible to be greatly anointed but lack the character of God, which is love (1 John 4:16).
In Matthew 7, Jesus made mention of some people who operated in the anointing: they cast out devils, performed miracles, and prophesied in His name, yet they were rejected by Him because of their character. Today in the body of Christ, especially in Africa, we hear messages emphasizing prayer, fasting, and chastity, but little mention is made of love, which is the instruction of the New Covenant (John 13:34-35, 1 John 4:7-8). Many ministers fail in loving like Christ.
Love is the foundation of our faith. Though anointing may empower you to do great acts in the kingdom, if you lack love, there will be no profit (1 Corinthians 13:1-3, 1 Corinthians 16:14). So, even as it is good that we desire the anointing and to walk in the gifts of the Holy Spirit, let’s seek to excel in love also. Love, which is a fruit of the Spirit, is developed in us when we fellowship with the Spirit. The practice of both closet and outdoor intimacy helps in this regard.
Also, seeking to understand the love of Christ and its dictates empowers us to love like Him (Ephesians 3:18). We are not recognized as children of God because we are anointed, but because we love like Him (John 13:35, 1 John 3:10, 1 John 4:7-8).

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help the body of Christ to walk in love.
