As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a wise builder who built his house on the rock.” ย  (Matthew 7:24, BSB)
In the beginning, God gave Adam and Eve a choice: to serve Him or to disobey His command. The option was presented in the form of a clear commandment: “but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it, you will certainly die” (Genesis 2:17). However, the devil also spoke to them, tempting them to go against God’s word (Genesis 3:5). This left Adam and Eve with a decision to make: whom would they obey, God or the devil?
Unfortunately, they chose to follow the devil’s suggestion, becoming his servants. As the Bible says, “…whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey” (Romans 6:16). When humanity yielded to the devil, we became unable to do right. Our hearts became evil from a young age, and we became tools for the devil’s use (Genesis 6:5).
However, through Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, every Christian has been delivered from the devil’s dominion. We have been translated from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light (Colossians 1:13). This means we have been empowered by God to do right. Despite his defeat, Satan, also known as the devil, persists in his attempts to dominate Christians. Having lost his power over believers, he resorts to deception, trying to trick us into doing his will. One way he achieves this is by disguising himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). He imitates God, speaking to us in ways that seem divine.
However, we must remember that the devil has access to both the physical and spiritual realms. Therefore, we should not build our lives solely on our feelings, visions, or spiritual experiences. Instead, we must test everything against God’s word, accepting what is good and rejecting what is evil (1 John 4:1, Isaiah 8:20).
A personal experience illustrates this point. Kenneth E. Hagin shared a story in his book “The Name of Jesus” about a minister of God who was sick. The minister had a vision of a man in bright clothing who told him it wasn’t God’s will for him to be healed. The minister believed this vision, which weakened his faith to receive healing. However, we know that it is God’s will for us to receive healing, as the Bible says, “for by His stripes we have been healed” (1 Peter 2:24).
The devil’s tactics are not new. He even tried to deceive Jesus Christ in the wilderness, tempting Him to do things that went against God’s will (Matthew 4:1-11, Luke 4:2-14). If the devil can attempt to deceive Jesus, he can certainly try to deceive us.
So, how can we overcome the devil’s deceptive tricks? We must build our lives on the solid foundation of God’s word. We must believe and obey only what is consistent with Scripture (Matthew 7:24-27).
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for His word. Let’s ask Him to help us build our lives on the word, enabling us to recognize what is of Him and what is not.
