At the fall of man, the Bible recorded the continued departure from Eden, which was symbolic of the presence of God. As men moved eastwards (from the direction of Eden), the evidence of the fall, sin and death, increased (Gen. 6:5). Then, a point came when it was recorded that people started calling upon the name of the Lord (Gen. 4:26). Why was it necessary for men to call upon Him?
Calling upon God simply means praying to on behalf of others or for ourselves, for His intervention in any situation needing change. This was the state man found himself, as one needing help, after declaring independence from God the day he ate of the tree of good and evil. God created man sovereign like himself, which meant man had the ability to decide based on his own volition.ย Therefore, being subjected to God was a thing of choice for Adam. However, there’s no vacuum in the spirit; By rejecting the headship of God, man came under the headship of Satan.
The very fact that man chose be in subjection to the enemy by rebelling against God, meant that God needs the permission of man for Him to intervene on his behalf and set him free from any bondage. Again, God gave rulership of earth to man (Psalm 115:16), which means that God would be breaking His own word if he acts on man’s behalf without man asking him. When we call upon the name of God (when we pray in His name), we are granting permission to God to act on our behalf and that of others.
Without us calling upon His name, the grace we need to overcome will not be given. And calling upon his name goes beyond the time we receive salvation, but an act that should continue always. Is it possible that Apostle Paul received the grace to be greater than all because he prayed in tongues more than all in his time? (1Cor. 14:18). We need His help to attain to our full potential in life. Call upon Him today
Prayer point:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s also ask Him to help us to remember to call upon Him in every situation.
