And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; [6] And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; ( 2 Peter 1:5-6 KJV)
Salvation marks the beginning of our walk with God when under the conviction of the Holy Spirit, we believed and confessed Christ as our Lord. Faith is the foundation of our Christian walk. It is by faith that we receive salvation and enter into a relationship with God.
However, faith is not meant to stand alone; it must grow and be strengthened with spiritual qualities that reflect the character of Christ. In our opening text, we are admonished add to our faith. This requires intentional effort and commitment. The first quality is virtue, which refers to moral excellence and a life of integrity. As followers of Christ, our faith should produce a life that is set apart, reflecting His holiness.
Secondly, we are to add knowledge. This is not just intellectual understanding, but deep, personal knowledge of God through His Word. Knowing God enables us to walk in wisdom and discernment. Without knowledge, our faith may be misguided or weak. Knowing God intimately will help us to walk with Him according to His will for our lives.
Thirdly, we are to cultivate temperance, or self-control. This is the ability to be in charge of our desires and impulses, keeping them in submission to the Spirit. A life without self-control can lead to spiritual instability and sin, but a disciplined life reflects Christโs nature. Even when tempted in the wilderness, he had self-control. To temperance, we must add patience. Patience is endurance through trials, trusting that God is in control. Life will bring challenges, but patience enables us to remain steadfast in our faith, knowing that trials produce perseverance (James 1:3).
Finally, we are called to add godliness, a reverent devotion to God in all aspects of life. Godliness is not just about religious actions; it is about living in a way that honors and glorifies God in our thoughts, words, and deeds. Each of these qualities builds upon the other, shaping us into mature believers. This process is not instant, it requires dedication, prayer, and the power of the Holy Spirit. When we diligently seek to grow in these virtues, we become more effective and fruitful in our walk with Christ (2 Peter 1:8).
Prayer point:
Lord, help me to grow in my faith daily. Strengthen me with virtue, knowledge, self-control, patience, and godliness in Jesus name.
