These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: [a]Josheb-Basshebeth the Tachmonite, chief among [b]the captains. He was called Adino the Eznite, because he had killed eight hundred men at one time. ย (2 Samuel 23:8 NKJV)
David had an army made up of mighty men, whose acts were recorded in Scripture. One of them could fight a whole army; killing a lion on a snowy day was also recorded among their acts (1 Samuel 23:11, 2 Samuel 23:20). When David needed water from a specific well behind enemy lines, three of them broke through the enemy’s ranks to get water for their master, which he later refused (2 Samuel 23:13-17). Such were the acts of these people; they were called mighty men because they did mighty things.
However, these men weren’t always mighty. When they first met David, they were described as “distressed, indebted, and discontented” (1 Samuel 22:2). After associating with David and learning about God through him, their identity changed from “distressed men” to “mighty men”. This change of identity was also seen among Jesus Christ’s disciples. Some were mere fishermen and tax collectors. However, when they followed Jesus Christ and learned about God through Him, their identity changed to becoming “fishers of men” and Apostles of the living God.
Like the mighty men of David and Jesus’ disciples, our identity changes when we spend time with God through His Word and fellowship with the Spirit. That is, as we gain knowledge through meditating on the Word and walking with Him by His Spirit, we become mighty before Him. The Scripture says, “The people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits” (Daniel 11:32). Though we can gain some aspects of this knowledge by associating with and listening to men and women of God’s presence, it doesn’t replace the need for us to spend time with Him in His Word.
There’s a mighty person in you, and there are exploits ordained for you to do. Abide in His Word and fellowship with the Spirit, and you will be empowered to manifest your true identity in Him.
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for His Word today. Let’s ask Him to help us abide in His Word and fellowship with His Spirit.
