8ย Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered. Hebrews 5:8 NIV

Today, I would like us to see or be reminded that character is formed, it is not simply given. Inasmuch as we receive the nature of Christ at baptism when we first believe, a process of formation is still needed to finally materialise this gift of righteousness we receive at baptism (2 Corinthians 5:17-21).

An analogy to compare this to is a building. Although you cannot build a house without the raw materials (salvation and its gift of righteousness), you still need to build (the character formation) that house to see a building. The raw material is very important, but the process of building is also very much needed to see a complete house standing.ย

In our opening verse, we see that Jesus had to learn obedience through what he suffered.ย  Obedience is a trait. It means that other godly traits like kindness, compassion, gentleness or being slow to anger are learnt through suffering, not just given.

The bible says in James 1:2-4

2ย Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3ย because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4ย Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Why should we be joyful? Because we understand that the trial or suffering is cementing that godly character in us, making us more and more like Christ Jesus our Lord. Just as you can persevere in the gym, thinking about your goal to be fit.

The entire process of character formation can be compared to the formation of a vase. At baptism, we receive the raw material. As we study the word of God, it shapes our vase into a fine shape, and finally, we are baked into a complete vase by enduring the fire of suffering. These sufferings are the pain or inconvenience you may experience while obeying the word of God.

Itโ€™s only when you practice what you believe that your faith is proven, made complete, made perfect and godly character is fully manifested.

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for this word. Let’s pray for the grace to endure the sufferings that come from obeying the word of God.
