Below is a snippet from the Britannica.com website about citizenship: ย
โCitizenship, relationship between an individual and a state to which the individual owesย allegianceย and in turn is entitled to its protection. Citizenship implies the status of freedom with accompanying responsibilities. Citizens have certain rights, duties, and responsibilities that are denied or only partially extended toย aliensย and other noncitizens residing in aย country. In general, full political rights, including the right to vote and to hold public office, areย predicatedย upon citizenship. The usual responsibilities of citizenship are allegiance,ย taxation, and military service.โย
As mentioned above, citizenship is a relationship between an individual and a state and through this the citizen has rights, duties, and responsibilities. But there are legal requirements to become a citizen of a country such as birth or naturalization. In a comparable manner, to come into the kingdom of God (which is of light)ย you must become born again by accepting Jesus as lord and savior. (John 3:1-21)ย
As a citizen of the kingdom of light there are duties and responsibilities for you. You must abide in Jesus as He abides in you for without Him you can do nothing. (John 15:5). We stay connected to Jesus through consistent prayers and studying of the word of God. We ought to also share the good news as it was shared to us. And we do this by first putting the word into practice for this in itself is a powerful message and then by preaching as the opportunity presents itself and as directed by the holy spirit. We ought to give to the needy(Proverbs 19:17) and support the work of God and His ministers (1 Corinthians 1:14).ย ย
As well as duties, the citizen also enjoys rights. In our kingdom we are blessed on every side and we enjoy rights like the right to never worry (which is also a duty) (Mathew 6:25). We are protected and God will only allow some setback that will turn around for our good. We are free and not slaves to our flesh but you still need to constantly put the flesh submitted under the spirit of God in you. ย
There is another kingdom we should be aware of by now, which is the kingdom of this world, the kingdom of darkness. There can be no dual citizenship between the light and dark kingdoms. You must choose your side. We should not conform to the standards of this world but seek knowledge about our own kingdom standards through the word(John 17:16). That is why we cannot be equally yoked with unbelievers. Bad company corrupts good character. (1 Corinthians 15:33). On the other hand, this does not mean completely avoiding non-believers but to limit our association with them and remembering love is part of our identity, not judgement but mercy.ย
Prayer Point:ย
Let’s thank God for our heavenly citizenship purchased for us through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Let’s pray to remain focus and trusting in our God in all things and not to envy what sinners do.
