Title: Confidence in God
By: Daniel Peter
Date: 01/03/2023
Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, LORD, so that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 2 Kings 6:16-17 NIV
It is the desire of every Christian to walk fully assured and confident of the future. This is actually our inheritance in Him, for He said His plan is to give us a future and hope (Jer. 29:11). However, human nature tends to give in to fear when it considers the future because its basis of judgement is things in the natural. Therefore, we must learn to ascend beyond the natural to gain sight.
Confidence in the Lord is the ability to be sure of a certain outcome because of our faith in Him. It’s a sign that we trust in His faithfulness. Men and women of faith have done great exploits because of this attribute. Among the Bible stories that exhibit confidence in God is that told of Elisha and his servant when the Syrian army invaded Israel (2 Kings 6). The servant of the Prophet was scared because of the multitudes of horses and chariots, but the Prophet was fully assured of his safety (he was confident).
What was the difference between Elisha and his servant? Sight. Their ability to see inspired different actions from them: Elisha exhibited faith while his servant exhibited fear. Elisha proceeded to correct the servant’s attitude by asking the Lord to open his eyes to see. Therefore, our ability to see determines how much confidence in God we can express.
The ability to see was also what separated Apostle Paul and others on the ship as they sailed from Israel to Rome. In the middle of the crises, when others were scared and restless, he said “Last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you (Acts 27:23-24 NIV)”. His ability to see helped him be calm and used to encourage others in the same situation as him.
Sight goes beyond seeing visions in the spirit, but also seeing the word (understanding scripture). The writer of Hebrew said “…for he hath said (in His word), I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say (confidently), The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me (Hebrews 13:5-6 Emphasis mine)”. So, when we boldly walk in faith in that which He has said in His word, it is said that we are confident in Him.
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us to see so we can be confident in Him.
