Title – Confronting your fears

 I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar and where you made a vow to Me. Now arise, get out of this land, and return to the land of your family. – Genesis 31:13 

There comes a time in life that the only option we have is to confront what frightens us. There are numerous examples in the Bible that can guide us to take this step. Jesus Christ, our saviour, had to face the cross to bring redemption to mankind. The Israelites had to fight and overcome the giants in the Promised Land before they could possess it. Be it an individual or a situation, sometimes the only way to make progress is by confronting what scares you the most.

In today’s message, Jacob had been a sojourner in another country for twenty years after fleeing from his brother, Esau. Now, Jacob had to decide between staying with his uncle and employer, Laban, who had cheated him on numerous occasions, or going back to his father’s house and facing his brother Esau, whom he deceived twenty years ago. Certainly, from the account in Genesis 32, Jacob was afraid to meet Esau because he did not know what Esau will do.

So why was Jacob able to do it? First and most importantly, he had an instruction from God to move. The antidote to fear is faith, and faith comes by hearing and hearing of the word of God. So, when the word of God came to Jacob to move, he knew he would succeed. Secondly, Jacob realised there was a need for a change. He had served Laban faithfully for twenty years, and it was time to cater for himself and his family. Jacob became tired of Laban’s trickery and unfairness, so he needed a change. Today, I pray that the Holy Spirit will grant us the boldness to confront our fears and make the needed progress in our lives.

Prayer:

Let us thank God for His word today and the answers to all our prayers. Let us pray for the grace to confront every intimidating situation that stands in the way of our success.
