Title: The Contradiction of Divine Promise

For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. (Habakkuk 2:3 KJV)
While studying Psalm 89, the passage struck me because it holds two very different tones within the same chapter. The psalmist begins by celebrating Godโs majesty, faithfulness, and the covenant promises made to David. His heart is full of praise for a God whose word never fails. Yet, as the psalm progresses, his tone shifts. He laments that the promises seem delayed, and it looks like a total departure from current realities.
This gap between Godโs word and our present circumstances is what we may call the contradiction of divine promise. It is that uncomfortable season where what God has said does not yet match what we see. Joseph knew this well. At seventeen, he dreamed of rulership. God showed him his future in vibrant colors. Yet, his world turned upside down through betrayal, slavery, false accusations, and prison. For years, his reality looked nothing like his promise. But the dream was still alive in Godโs heart, and in due time, Pharaoh’s butler remembered him; he was brought before the King, and Joseph stepped into the role God had ordained for him.
Abraham also lived in this contradiction. He was promised descendants as numerous as the stars, yet decades passed before Isaac was born. Romans 4:20 tells us that “he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God.โ Abraham learned to glorify God not just for promises fulfilled, but also in the long silence between promise and fulfillment.
We often rejoice when God speaks, but the true test comes after the initial excitement fades. In that season, the enemy whispers doubt, our circumstances seem hopeless, and our hearts grow weary. But the truth is that faith thrives in contradiction. Faith is not proven by what we see, but in holding on when there is nothing visible to hold.
Every promise has a journey and a timing. Our part is to keep our eyes on the One who made the promise, not just the promise itself. Worship when you feel like weeping. Declare His faithfulness when what you are going through doesnโt look like it, and don’t let time dilute your expectation. One day, the contradictions will dissolve into fulfillment, and you will look back with amazement at how Godโs word never failed.
Prayer point:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to teach us to trust Him in our waiting season as we hold on to His promise.
