Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. (Psalm 1:1 KJV)

Jehoshaphat was one of the few kings who followed the ways of the Lord like David did, and God was with him and established the kingdom of Judah under him (2 Chr. 17:5). However, he almost ruined his life when he chose to partner with Ahab in helping him to fight in Ramoth-gilead. It was very clear that his way of life was different from Ahabโ€™s, but he still continued with the unholy alliance and almost lost his life in the process until he cried out. Many were not that lucky. When Satan cannot get a man away from God, he brings ungodly men around him to associate.

The Bible is clear that the company we keep shapes the direction of our lives. Our scriptural text today outlines a progression: first walking in the counsel of the ungodly, then standing in the way of sinners, and finally sitting in the seat of the scornful. Wrong associations rarely destroy suddenly, but instead, they lure gradually. What begins as harmless companionship may end in compromise, entanglement, and even destruction.

Jehoshaphatโ€™s alliance with Ahab was not just political; it was spiritual danger. Though he loved the Lord, he yoked himself to one who despised Godโ€™s word. The result was near disaster. Similarly, Paul warns us, โ€œBe not deceived: evil communications corrupt good mannersโ€ (1 Cor. 15:33). Even a righteous man can stumble when he chooses to walk closely with those who reject Godโ€™s ways.

Many believers today underestimate the power of influence. Friends, business partners, or relationships that disregard God can slowly pull us off course. Compromise often feels small at first, like laughter at ungodly jokes, silence when truth should be spoken, or agreement with values that contradict scripture. Yet each step makes the next one easier until the believer is seated comfortably among the scornful.

The blessed life which is the life God approves is found in separation from ungodly influence and delight in Godโ€™s Word (Psalm 1:2). Our strength to stand comes not by willpower alone, but by being rooted in Godโ€™s truth. When we choose His Word as our counsellor, we will not need the advice of the ungodly.

Prayer point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s pray that the Lord will give me discernment to recognise wrong associations and courage to walk away from them.
