Title: Dear Servants of God

I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power.

(Ephesians 3:7 NIV)

For some time now, I have been asking myself if we all truly see ourselves as servants of God. Especially in the house of God, many Christians tend to forget who they serve due to the position they occupy. Have we forgotten the teachings of our Lord Jesus or the examples He gave us to learn from?

I personally don’t value titles or positions in church or anywhere else. Where I originally come from (Ghana), people tend to value titles or positions more than the work needed to be done. To me, this prompts corruption even more because of the kind of intimidation that some of these people in such positions use on others.

Let’s look at the Pharisees who deceived the people of God just for their selfish reasons (Mathew 23:23). These people really enjoyed their positions because they endlessly were praised by the believers. When Jesus came, they hated Him because He taught the blind-folded people the truth. The moment the truth is said or revealed, those whose positions are at stake fight against it. We read in Luke 20 that the scribes and the Chief Priests sought to have Jesus arrested. In John 5, we are told that they wanted to kill Him, and in chapters 8 and 10, they tried to stone Him to death.

When we read these accounts in the Scriptures, we are prompted to ask, why did these people speak the way they did and felt the way they did, with such hostility toward Jesus? Simple, it’s because Jesus was now the ruler and the most loved by the people. Also, their evil ways were exposed. Before Jesus came, it was the Pharisees particularly as well as the Sadducees and scribes, who set the moral standard for the community. They sat in the highest places in the synagogue. They were the ones who were most honored and celebrated for their virtue but their virtue as Jesus taught repeatedly, was a pretense.

These same pretenses are still in some of us who sit in high places in the Church. We pretend to be godly and right in the sight of people but deep in our hearts, Jesus knows we are hypocrites! Instead of us serving Jesus Christ, we want others to serve us. Instead of us kneeling before Jesus, we expect the sheep that our Lord Jesus has given to us to watch over, to bow before us.

When Jesus came to earth, for 33 years he never brought himself high, although He deserved it. He humbled himself, took the form of a servant and lived with us in obedience to God the Father (Philippians 2:5-7). Why are we proving to be stubborn Christians? Haven’t we learnt enough? (Matthew 23:12).

All those in high positions in Churches; Pastors, Deacons, Teachers, Elders etc., you also are servants! Your judgements won’t be any different. More is expected from you dear servants of God so don’t bury your talents (Matthew 25:14-30). Those who have been given more, much more is expected.

Beloved Servants of God, I would like to end with these powerful message Apostle Paul wrote to the Church in Ephesus: “I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power.  Although I am less than the least of all God’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.  His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord” Ephesians 3:1-11(NIV).

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for His Word today. Let’s ask God to help all believers around the world to be humble and faithful servants in every position given to us.
