I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service. And be not fashioned according to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Romans 12:1-2 ASV
Doing the will of God is a function of us knowing the will of God. As believers, it is expected of us to seek to discover God’s will. Apostle Paul admonished the Ephesian Church, “Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is” (Ephesians 5:17 NIV), suggesting that seeking to know His will is an activity of the wise.
Though the Word is the will of God, not everything written in the Bible is the will of God. The Bible is a faithful witness and gives accounts of statements made by God to men in different dispensations, angels, the devil, demons, and men who walked with God and those who didn’t. So, just because something is written in the Bible, doesn’t mean it is God’s will for you.
Again, it’s not all of God’s will for your life that you can find in the texts of the Bible. For example, the name of the university to choose is not literally written in the Bible, and neither is the city God wants you to live in necessarily there. These things are revealed to us through other means of communication that God uses when we ask.
However, there are things we were admonished by God to do, which will help us to discover His will at every junction in our lives. The first is for us to present our bodies as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1). This statement, though inclusive, is not limited to living righteously, but also includes being willing to accept whatever the Lord says, even when it’s discomforting to our flesh. It may be God’s will for you to go to the cross, which the flesh hates. But can you say, “Not my will but yours be done,” like our Lord (Luke 22:42)? When you have this disposition of heart, discovering His will becomes easy, for you are willing to obey.
Another thing we were admonished to do is to “renew our minds with the word” (Romans 12:2, Ephesians 4:23). As we spend time to meditate on and listen to the Word, our way of thinking will be renewed, making it easier for us to identify the will of God.
Prayer Point

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us offer ourselves as living sacrifices and to renew our minds with the Word.
