You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. Genesis 3:4 NIV

When speaking about the end times, Jesus Christ warned the church against deception (Matthew 24:4-5). Therefore, as believers, we must equip ourselves with the right knowledge to stand against the enemy’s deceptive tricks.

When talking about the devil, the narrator in Revelation 20:2 refers to him as the “old” serpent. By using the adjective “old,” the narrator implies that he is the same serpent that existed in the beginning. This means the deceptive tactics of the enemy in these end times are not new; they are the same as those he has always used. With this understanding, let’s consider how he deceived the first humans and learn from their experience.

When trying to make Adam and Eve partake of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the serpent convinced Eve to believe there would be no consequences for her actions; her sins. He said, “You will not surely die” (Genesis 3:4). This motivated Eve to eat the fruit when she saw it was good for food, though Adam was not deceived (1 Timothy 2:14). Like Eve, the devil has deceived many Christians into believing there are no consequences for their actions. This is one of his tricks in these end times.

A tool that has proven potent in his work of deception is the wrong understanding of grace and the merciful nature of God. Many believers have persisted in sin because they believe they will surely receive mercy from God after their act, forgetting that God knows the intent of the heart. He has stated the judgment awaiting those who deliberately keep on sinning after receiving the knowledge of the truth, which is a fearful expectation of judgment (Hebrews 10:26-27).

My brothers and sisters, God cannot be mocked. If you have made a decision to follow Jesus, do so in truth. God hates sin, and you should too. If you find yourself in a position where you are comfortable in sin, you have been deceived. Like the prodigal son, come to your senses and return to the Father.
