Title: Don’t Be a Castaway

But I keep under my body in subjection, and bring it into bondage: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
1 Corinthians 9:27 KJV

Though we have been saved by grace through faith in Christ, we have a responsibility. The responsibility of ensuring that the flesh, whose desire is always contrary to the Spirit’s (Galatians 5:17), is kept under subjection. Therefore, there’s a call to action we must all respond to, especially if we love and fear the Lord.

Matthew recorded a parable of the Kingdom Jesus shared:

“Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away.”
Matthew 13:47-48

Salvation Christ brought is a large net that has caught different kinds of fish (people), but in the end, there will be a separation, as revealed by Jesus’ parable. Those who will be rejected are those who, despite knowing the Lord, continued in sin. Examples of these are those who prophesied in God’s name and did miracles but were told by Jesus Christ that He didn’t know them, calling them workers of iniquity (Matthew 7:21-23).

Apostle Paul, a vessel through whom the understanding of grace came to the body of Christ, mentioned the possibility of being a castaway (rejected by God at the end), even though he was a preacher of the Gospel (1 Corinthians 9:27). The possibility of being rejected at the end is replete in scripture, and the key to avoiding that is to put the flesh under subjection to the Spirit’s desire. That is, we should not yield to the sinful desires of the flesh but be obedient to both the written and spoken instructions.

Yielding to sin because we know God forgives sin is like crucifying Christ again, whose result is a fearful expectation of judgement (Hebrews 6:4-6). Let’s be responsible Christians, shunning the desire to sin, knowing the judgement of the Lord.

Prayer Points

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us put our flesh under subjection to Him, so we will not be a castaway at the end.
