When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
Luke 5:4 NIV
He went on fishing with his partners. The night was unusual, as he had no catch. Being a professional fisherman with a reputation for excellence in his job, a night without a catch was disappointing for his standard—but what could he do?
However, a young preacher who was just starting His ministry beckoned to him to allow Him use his boat, as He stood on it to address the multitude on the shore. After His sermon, something unexpected happened that changed this fisherman’s life.
When He (the young preacher) had finished speaking, He said to Simon (the fisherman), “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch” (Luke 5:4 NIV, emphasis mine). Though he was reluctant—because his experience as a fisherman suggested that there would be no catch again that day—he obeyed. At his obedience, he got a great catch, so much so that his net was breaking, and an extra boat was needed to gather the fish (Luke 5:7).
Like Peter the fisherman, you may have toiled all year without any result. Do not give up; Jesus is standing on the shore, waiting to use your boat as He did Peter’s. No matter what life must have thrown at you this year, it can still be your best year ever.
Peter’s great catch came after he obeyed the voice of God. Stay sensitive to God as the year comes to an end, for it only takes a word from Him for your situation to change. Do not give up!
Prayer Point
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us stay sensitive to Him so we can hear the instructions that will lead to our increase.
