Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.ย ย Hebrew 4:1 KJV
After God created the earth in six days, on the seventh day He rested. God resting was not because He needed it, but to show us a reality that exists in Him, a place of rest. This is what the Sabbath indicated.
God’s rest is a place where your labour ends; where what comes to you is not because of your labour (work), but because of what He has done. When the Israelites were delivered from Egypt and entered into the promised land, they occupied houses they didn’t build and possessed vineyards they didn’t plant (See Deu. 6:10-12). Similarly, in His rest, all things have been provided for.
The blessing in the Old Testament was a reward for working; what you get is because of what you did. For example, the blessing of prosperity and healing were linked to your service (work). For God said in the Law “And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee (Exo. 23:25)”. However, in the New Testament, the blessing is not necessary a reward for your labour (work or service), but they are available to us simply because of what Christ did at the cross of Cavalry.
For example, the healing we have received is not because of what we did, but what He did, for the New Covenant says “who His own self bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness; by whose stripes ye were healed (1 Peter 2:24). This is also true for financial prosperity, for the New Covenant states “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich (2 Cor. 8:9)”.Therefore, we come into God’s rest when we believe the Gospel.
Sadly, apart from the truth that we have been saved by His death and resurrection, many Christians have not heard the full Gospel. What is been preached in many Churches today is the Law, which emphasizes works for blessing. Because of this, many have not come into the fullness of the realities we have in Christ and are resisted by God.ย
Yes, the full Gospel must be preached. But we as individuals also need to take responsibility to seek knowledge and not depend on our leaders.
Prayer Point
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to equip men with the right knowledge of Himself and send them forth to the nations to preach the Gospel.ย
