โ€œThis, then, is how you ought to regard us: as servants of Christ and as those entrusted with the mysteries God has revealed.โ€
โ€” 1 Corinthians 4:1 (NIV)

When Jesus Christ ascended on high, Scripture records that He gave gifts unto men (Ephesians 4). These gifts โ€” the ministries of Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers โ€” are people. His purpose for giving these gifts is the maturing of the entire body of Christ. This building of the body is a collective work, not an individual endeavour. In other words, we all have a role to play in the spiritual growth of the Church.

Some weeks ago, I asked a friend, โ€œCan a single ministry raise a disciple of Christ who is complete in his or her knowledge of God?โ€ After a brief silence, his answer was no. The truth is, no single ministry or minister has been entrusted with all the mysteries of Christ. Each of us carries a specific revelation of God. Therefore, for a Christian to be well-rounded, he or she must be open to receiving knowledge from ministers outside their denomination or circle.

When God calls you as a minister, He takes you through a unique path where you encounter Him from a unique perspective. That perspective becomes the mystery He entrusts to you, and it is needed for the edification of the whole body. Moses saw His back; another might have seen His side; yet another may be given the privilege to behold His face. To know Jesus fully โ€” to hold a complete image of Him โ€” it is wise to listen to all His witnesses.

Even the writers of the Gospels presented unique views of Jesus. Matthew saw Him as a King. Mark revealed Him as a Servant. John captured His divine nature and saw Him as God. Luke, on the other hand, emphasised His humanity. Though each view differs, all are accurate, revealing a unique perspective of the same Christ. This truth also applies to His ministers today.

As a minister, do not worry about sounding like someone else. You have been entrusted with a mystery that may differ from what another has received. Faithfully declare what He has taught you, for by doing so, you contribute your part to the building of the body of Christ.

Prayer Point:

Thank God for His word today. Ask Him for the grace to faithfully share the mystery He has entrusted to you with the entire body of Christ.
