11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.   Hebrews 11:1-2

Faith, “…the evidence of things not seen”. It means that you believe before you see. Not that you see then you believe. The Bible says it is impossible to please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6). Beloved in Christ, today, let’s be reminded of the necessity of Faith. 

Faith in a way is like taking a risk, except this time we are talking about believing God’s word and holding on to it. In His infinite wisdom, God has decided to keep His best only for those who believe without seeing; those who believe before they see instead of waiting to see and obviously believe. And I am not talking here about blind trust in anything anyone says but about believing the word of God and also the witnessing of the spirit of God, even about what someone may say for instance prophecy.

God has spoken in His word so that he can speak to you without so much surprises. So you have read that God told Abraham to leave your country and go to … So if God speaks to you to go to so and so, why should you again be too surprised? We are not serving a static God or distant God but a living God who is active and speaking to us daily. Are you believing or just discarding everything He says so long as there is any risk, any discomfort, or any challenge? So you might say after all “I am following the Ten Commandments”.

Beloved, God did not just call us to follow what is written in the Bible. We are called to be led by the Spirit of God (Romans 8:14) with the word of God as a framework or guideline to recognize what the Spirit says. It is beyond just living according to a manual. The ultimate guide is the living Spirit of God in you. 

If we don’t believe and obey God’s voice speaking through the Spirit in various ways we cannot get the best from God. We cannot be counted among the elders who obtained a good report of Hebrews 11:1.

How then do we expand our faith capacity and maintain it? As you know, by prayer, notably mentioned in scripture, praying in tongues (Jude 20:1, 1 Corinthians 14:4, 1 Corinthians 14:18). Then by hearing the word, studying the word. The word inspires faith and helps us recognize the voice of God in order to obey. Others include love and humility. Just ponder this; how did Joseph know that the angel who appeared to him was telling the truth about Mary? Could the knowledge of the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14 have been a help in his faith? 

In essence, what I am saying today is that faith really is a living relationship with God; from one of trust and obedience to another trust and obedience, all guided by the word and his inner convictions and confirmations.
