20 In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use. 21 Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.
22 Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. 2 Timothy 2:20-22 NIV
In these end times, where sexual immorality and dishonest living are on the rise, we must once again be reminded that God has great rewards for those who purge themselves constantly and pursue righteousness.
As our opening verse says, one of those rewards is being fit for God’s special purposes. We might have heard the saying that God chooses the unqualified and qualifies the chosen, but we must not misunderstand this to mean God doesn’t have His selection criteria.
God has qualities He searches for in a man. God chose David because He was a man after God’s heart, in other words, desired to please God (1 Samuel 13:14). Mary had to be a virgin to be qualified to become the mother of Jesus. And from her response to the Angel after the announcement, we see that she was one who was submitted to the will of God. (Luke 1:38)
The person God chooses may not be qualified in terms of human standards, like eloquence (for instance, the case of Moses) or education, like the case of most of the Apostles, or even have a perfect character, but they have spiritual qualities that attract God to entrust them with responsibility and equip them further.
Therefore, we must be motivated by this to purge ourselves and pursue righteousness so that God can use us for special purposes.
We purge ourselves when we keep listening to the word of God(John 15:3), repenting when we fall short and asking God in prayer to purify our hearts, amongst other spiritual exercises.

- Let’s thank God for this word today.
- Let’s pray that God will help us to be aware of the importance of purging ourselves always.
