Title: Free But Slaves Of God
But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. (Romans 6:22 NKJV)

As a leader of the Youth Fellowship in my Church, I mostly interact with young Believers who had just began their Christian journey. As a Shepherd who cares much about his flock, I spend time praying for them and also do my best to help them grow spiritually. When I interact with them, I always encourage them to spend consistent time in the presence of God through daily quiet time, prayers, and worship.
I sometimes check up on them to find out if they are doing as discussed. One thing I have realized is that most of them sometimes misunderstand my show of care for their spiritual growth as me trying to control them. Therefore, the common feedback I receive is that โcoming to Christ gives me the freedom to do whatever I want at whenever I wantโ.
I believe there is a big misconception in the Body of Christ regarding the Freedom we have in Christ. This has caused many Believers to live their lives anyhow and in sin which might result in them becoming a cast away (1 Cor 9:27). The question is, does coming to Christ really give us the freedom to do whatever we want without any consequences? To better answer this question, we need to break it down into these two questions and answer them: What and who were we slaves of before we came to Christ? What and who did Christ give us freedom over when we became Born Again?
A slave is a person who is forced to work for and obey another and is considered to be their property. Apostle Paul simplified it for us by saying,โ You are a slave to whoever or whatever you submit toโ (Rom 6:16). When we were in the world, we were slaves of sin and the devil; we were always doing their bidding. Thatโs why some people could travel for longer distance and even board a flight just to commit sinful acts and return. This is because sin and the devil were our masters who were controlling our lives and telling us what to do.
Glory be to the most high God who loves us so much that He sent His only begotten son to offer Himself as a sacrifice to purchase our freedom from the devil and sin (John 3:16, Rom 6:22). When we come to Christ, we are neither slave of the devil nor of sin. However, we become slaves of God and therefore have to submit to Him, obey Him and do His Will.
The truth is that being a slave for God is different from any other slavery because it is not forced but a choice. However, the rewards and blessings we will receive when we choose to submit to the Lord in obedience, righteousness, holiness and doing His Will far outweigh anything in this world. This includes everlasting life.
Beloved in the Lord, it is important to know that when we come to Christ, we are not free to do whatever we want. Although we have freedom over sin and devil, we become slaves of God. Therefore, letโs willingly submit to the Lord and do His Will at all times and He will reward us immensely.
Prayer Point:
Letโs thank God for His Word today. Letโs ask the Lord to help all Believers to always submit to Him and do His Will to the end.
God bless you all
