He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenantโnot of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
2 Corinthians 3:6 NIV
As believers, we have to grow in our understanding of the mind of God; understanding His core principles and desires, more than just knowing a list of dos and don’ts. When you understand, you surpass one who merely has knowledge or knows facts.
Back in school, our teachers usually encouraged us to understand rather than just memorise. When you understand, you are able to apply knowledge in different circumstances. But this is not the case when you merely memorise. For those who are familiar with maths, understanding is compared to knowing the formula and is far better than just knowing a list of answers to certain questions.
So it is with Scripture. In all the stories and teachings, God is leading us to understand His core principles, His mind. One of those core principles is that GOD IS LOVE. He loves us, and His desire is that we love Him and love one another (which is one of the reasons we all need salvation). Another core principle is that He is JUST and, at the same time, MERCIFUL.
As we understand God’s mind, as opposed to just trying to know a list of don’ts and dos, we are able to deduce, with the guidance of the Spirit, what is wrong and what is right, even when it is not explicitly stated in the Bible.
So if someone tells you something new, you don’t only judge by saying “where is it written in the Bible” as in “let me see that line or that phrase that commands us to do this or not to do this.” Rather, you might say, “Which principle of God are you applying, and what verses can you share with me to confirm this principle?” Sometimes all you need to ask is “Is this love?” For instance, every mature believer should know that masturbation or watching pornography is a sin, but where is it written in the Bible? However, if you understand God’s mind, you will know that sex is sacred (Hebrews 13:4) and is only for marriage, and encouraging sin is itself sin.
Prayer Point:
1. Let’s ask God to help us to grow in wisdom and understanding.
2. Let’s ask God to help us to be led by His Spirit.
