21 God made him who had no sin to be sin[a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.  2 Corinthians 5:21

As a believer, you would experience the attack of the enemy (the accuser of the brethren) when you fall into sin. It’s not the conviction of the Holy Spirit to start again but rather a discouragement from even trying or rather an encouragement to just give up or give in. Something like “What’s the point even trying again”, “Why am I even resisting the passions or flesh”?…Self condemnation.

However, there is an assurance or comfort or shield or strength which is the gospel and good news. That we are saved by grace through faith. Does it mean that we would continue to sin because our salvation is hinged on Faith? No! because that faith won’t let us continue in sin unless we denounce the faith which is the devil’s real target: our precious faith!

Faith in what exactly? Faith in Christ Jesus; That Jesus, who had no sin suffered and died on the cross so that we, sinners, who put our faith in Jesus, receive the “Gift of righteousness” which is Salvation. For scripture says “Without holiness, no one will see God”. 

There are two ways you can try to achieve righteousness: by counting on your works or by simply putting your faith in Jesus and accepting His gift of righteousness. For the latter approach, you enter a place of rest and are assured that your righteousness is secured as it is not authored by you but by God Himself. You’re therefore encouraged to renounce sin and bounce back up after any fall. As scripture says “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

This assurance of salvation by faith, assurance of righteousness by faith, not performance, is a shield. As scripture describes it, “the breastplate of righteousness” or “the helmet of salvation”. Imagine the trouble to your heart or mind the devil will be causing you if have not yet understood and believed that you have received the righteousness of God through faith in Christ Jesus, as a gift!

The irony is that you cannot manifest great works or lasting works of righteousness if your confidence is not in the “righteousness of God” but rather in your righteousness by works. This is what keeps you from pride (self-righteousness) and spiritual attacks of discouragement when you fall. 

Prayer Point: 

Let’s thank God for this exhortation today. May God help us believe and accept His gift of righteousness instead of relying on our works of righteousness which are like filthy rags compared to God’s righteousness in Christ Jesus.
