โ€œIf it pleases the king, let a royal decree go out from himโ€ฆ that Vashti shall come no more before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she.โ€
โ€” Esther 1:19 (NKJV)

One powerful story in Scripture that reveals the importance of humility in an exalted position is the account of Queen Vashti and Esther in the Book of Esther.

King Ahasuerus (also known as Xerxes) displayed the riches and splendor of his kingdom for one hundred and eighty days (Esther 1:4). At the climax of this celebration, he desired to showcase Queen Vashti before his guests. However, she refused the kingโ€™s command. This act of disobedience was seen not merely as a personal decision but as dishonor toward the king.

As a result, a decree was issued that Vashti would no longer appear before the king, and that her royal position would be given โ€œto another who is better than sheโ€ (Esther 1:19). This shows a sobering truth: positions can be replaced when pride overrides submission.

A search was made throughout the empire, and Esther was chosen (Esther 2:17). She found favor in the sight of all who saw her. Unlike Vashti, Esther demonstrated humility and obedience. She obeyed Mordecaiโ€™s instruction not to reveal her Jewish identity (Esther 2:20), just as she had done from childhood. She also followed the guidance of Hegai, the custodian of the women, taking only what he advised (Esther 2:15).

Where Vashti resisted, Esther submitted. Where pride cost one a crown, humility secured anotherโ€™s throne. Esther did not only replace Vashti; she exercised great authority and later became an instrument of deliverance for her people.

Scripture reminds us that God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. In every position God lifts us intoโ€”whether in marriage, ministry, leadership, or daily responsibilitiesโ€”humility expressed through obedience is what establishes us. Exaltation without humility is unstable.

God indeed has replacements. May we never lose what He has entrusted to us through pride.

Prayer Points:

  • Let us thank God for His Word and the lessons it teaches us.
  • Ask Him to cultivate true humility in our hearts.
  • Pray that we will remain obedient, so we do not fall from the height He has graciously placed us.
