Call To Prayer

28 “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.” 29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than human beings! John 21:19
The bible clearly instructs us to obey our parents and to submit to governing authorities, for they are given their authority by God (Romans 13:1, Ephesians 6:1).
However, what happens when what your parents or authority request is contrary to what God instructed? Do you then obey men and disobey God? Certainly not!
This was the situation the Apostles found themselves in our opening verse. The chief priests instructed them not to preach about Jesus, contradicting what God had instructed them to do. Their response: “We must obey God rather than human beings!”
This too should be our response when we find ourselves having to choose between obeying even God-given authority, such as parents or governments and obeying the almighty God who gives all authority.
Ok, you may say, you are scared of what will happen to you if you disobey ungodly instructions from authority, but consider what Jesus said in Matthew 10:28
28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
First of all, no one can hurt you unless God permits it, in which case God will still turn it around for your good afterwards if you continue to trust Him (Romans 8:28). However, we should be aware that it is a terrible thing to face the wrath or judgment of God. It would be better, therefore, to suffer in the flesh for a while if God permits than to face God’s judgment, which is eternal.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego understood this well when they refused to bow down to the image of King Nebuchadnezzar in defiance of his instructions. They trusted God for deliverance but were also ready to suffer and die if God permitted it. And God indeed came through for them. Yet many have also died obeying God as God chose for them to glorify Him in that way (John 21:19).
God is almighty; He is the one with the ultimate authority. He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Let’s trust Him and fear Him the most!
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for this word today. Let us pray for God to help us gain wisdom to fear Him who is all-powerful and gives all authority, above any other authority.
