I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. (Habakkuk 2:1 KJV)
The desire of most Christians is to hear God, and this is a legitimate one. However, not everyone sees this desire fulfilled. There are many reasons for this, one of which is sin, but that is not my emphasis for today. I want to look at listening and how this shapes our Christian experience.
In Mark 13:33, Jesus commanded his disciples to watch and pray, and we today fall into that bracket. When we pray, we must watch to hear or see what the Lord is saying to us (Hab. 2:1). Prayer is not a monologue and should never be treated as such. A lot of us wake up in the morning, rush to say our morning prayer like we are forced to do it, and off we go. There is no time allocated for feedback from the Lord. God is speaking, but we are not watching to hear from Him.
Another angle to it is listening to sermons from anointed men of God. As good as this is, it must be balanced because many believers don’t read their Bibles anymore, but can listen to messages from morning till evening. But quietly, God is saying, “carry my word, I want to speak to you, I want to talk and commune with you”. The word of God is the giver of understanding and bearer of light into any matter. Psalm 119:130 says;
“The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.”
God had placed embargo on me at different times from listening to messages because he wants me to focus more on His word, and when I do, I hear Him expressly. He will later then permit me to carry on listening to men after I have listened to Him.
Lastly, God comes to speak to us in the dreams of the night when we are no longer in control, but most of us wake up and don’t document it, and we forget it afterwards. There are times I have struggled to remember a significant dream that l did not write down, even though I knew the Lord was conveying a message, and it was painful because I couldn’t act on it.
The issue is not that God is not speaking. The main issue is, are we listening?

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s pray for a gentle spirit to hear from Him every time He speaks.
