6ย But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7ย For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8ย But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 1 Timothy 6: 6-8

 

Some people are very rich but are unhappy, while some are very poor and are also unhappy. What then is the way to happiness? As the word of God reveals in the above bible verses, โ€œgodliness with contentment is great gainโ€. Jesus is the way to true happiness!

In every season of your life, you can be happy if you discover the secret of happiness. As believers, we know that the secret is in walking with God, who is the source of all things, including happiness. But if I am to mention something specific today, it is godliness and contentment. There is a joy that comes from walking in line with Godโ€™s will, and there is a peace that comes when you choose to be contented.ย 

Saint Paul repeats this secret in Philippians 4 11-13:

ย I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12ย I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13ย I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

As you can see from the above, Saint Paul learnt that to be happy, he had to be content, and to be content, he had to find his joy or strength in Jesus Christ.ย 

Am I saying that ambition or dreams of a brighter future are evil? No. But there is a balance. We shouldnโ€™t allow those dreams to make us bitter about the present moment. Even when those dreams come to pass, if you donโ€™t have a solid relationship with Christ, you will still realise that you are longing for more! Or empty! In hard or good times, Christ is an invariable source of strength, of peace, and assurance.ย 

May we learn like Saint Paul to be contented in any and every situation through Christ, who strengthens us.ย

Letโ€™s thank God for this word and every blessing in our lives.

Letโ€™s pray for the grace to hunger and thirst for righteousness.ย
