โ€œNow godliness with contentment is great gain.โ€
โ€” 1 Timothy 6:6 (KJV)

In His Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5โ€“7), Jesus Christ shared many foundational truths. Among them was the admonition to seek first the Kingdom of God above all else (Matthew 6:33). In this teaching, He revealed that the driving force behind pagan worship is the desire to have their needs met. But for us Christians, we have been called to trust. Therefore, the worship God requires from us must be inspired by love, not by needs.

Without true contentment, we cannot live a godly life. Scripture says, โ€œFor the love of money is the root of all kinds of evilโ€ (1 Timothy 6:10). If gain becomes the motivation behind our worship, we will eventually find ourselves doing things we shouldnโ€™t as believers. Contentment, however, is of great value before God.

Although God blesses us materially, this should never be the reason we approach Him. When we study the lives of the prophets, we find that they could not have fulfilled their ministries if their motivation had been personal needs. What would Isaiah have gained by walking naked for three years? (Isaiah 20:2โ€“3). Or what was desirable about John the Baptist wearing camelโ€™s hair and eating only locusts and wild honey? (Matthew 3:4). Yet, these men served their generation faithfully, and the fruits of their walk with God continue to bless lives today.

Yes, it is Godโ€™s desire for you to prosper. But what is the value of prosperity if it becomes the reason you drift away from Him? To possess the character that enables God to entrust you with great wealth without losing your devotion, you may need to endure trying seasonsโ€”just as Joseph did before his exaltation in Egypt (Genesis 37โ€“41). To overcome in such seasons, you must learn to be content. If Joseph had not been content with the food and whatever else he got in Potipharโ€™s house, he might have fallen for Potipharโ€™s wifeโ€™s offer of sex (Genesis 39:7โ€“12).

Let love for God be the motivation behind your worship. This love will help you remain content with what you have and empower you to live a godly life.

Prayer Points:

Letโ€™s thank God for His Word today.
Letโ€™s ask Him to help us cultivate contentment and live a truly godly life.
