And God blessed them, and God said unto them, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”
(Genesis 1:28)
Marriage is an institution founded by God. Understanding His mind concerning marriage would help believers succeed in it. As we know, success is linked to the fulfillment of purpose. What, then, is His purpose for marriage? Answering this question is the first step in being successful in it.
When God created Adam and Eve, He commissioned them into an assignment. From what was written in Genesis 1:28, the assignment given to Adam and Eve can be summarised as “multiplication and dominion”. For them to multiply, they had to procreate, and marriage was the platform for this. So, though Eve was a gift of companionship to Adam, their coming together as husband and wife was so they could multiply and fill the earth.
However, the coming of the Last Adam (Jesus Christ) marked an entrance into a new dispensation (1 Corinthians 15:45). Though the command of multiplication still stands, this command must be interpreted based on the light of the focus of the New Covenant, which is reconciliation of humanity to God (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). This means the concept of multiplication is no longer limited to natural procreation but the birthing of souls into the Kingdom. To put it simply, the purpose of marriage is soul winning.
God’s heart is for souls. When kingdom citizens come into the union of marriage, it is God’s will that both in the marriage serve Him together. This truth should be an important factor in choosing a spouse, as choosing one not willing to do the work of God is going into a marriage that has failed from the beginning. For this reason, we must pray that every member of the body of Christ, especially the singles, understand this truth and align themselves to Him.
Prayer Points:
  • Let’s thank God for His word today.
  • Let’s ask Him to help each member of the body of Christ to know His purpose for marriage and to fulfill it.
