Goshen

Call To Prayer
Title: Goshen
By: Daniel Peter

Throughout Egypt, hail struck everything in the fieldsโ€”both people and animals; it beat down everything growing in the fields and stripped every tree. The only place it did not hail was the land of Goshen, where the Israelites were. ย  Exodusโ€ฌ โ€ญ9:25โ€ญ-โ€ฌ26โ€ฌ โ€ญNIVโ€ฌโ€ฌ
We are in an uncertain time, and this is evident in the rising food costs, inflation, wars, and rumors of wars in the nations of the earth. Even as the earth experiences birth pains, there’s a location of safety for believers; a place of refuge.
When God was judging Egypt using Moses, there was a clear distinction between the places where the Egyptians dwelt and where the Israelites dwelt. When there was darkness, hail, swarms of flies or whatever plague God sent in the land of Egypt, Goshen (where the Israelites dwelt) was exempted.
Like the Israelites in Egypt, there’s a location of dwelling where we are exempted from the turmoil the world is currently facing.
The name Goshen means “nearness” or “drawing near.” When God was to show Moses His glory, He told him, “There is a place near Me where you may stand on a rock (Exo. 33:21 NIV)“. And Apostle Paul said of the rock that accompanied the Israelites, “…that rock was Christ (1 Cor. 10:4 NIV).” Christ is not just a person; He is a location of dwelling. Jesus Christ told His disciples, “…in Me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble…” (John 16:33 NIV). Like Goshen in Egypt, Christ is a location of safety (refuge) for those who dwell in Him.
Though by salvation we have been translated into Christ (Col. 1:13), we have a responsibility to abide in Him (see John 15). We abide in Him by being conscious of Him and intimating with Him in prayer, the Word, and listening to His voice. As we are intentional in ensuring that we abide or dwell in Him, God protects us from every evil in the world, and we are provided for.
Christ is the secret place of the Most High, and those who dwell in Him abide under His shadow (His covering), like chicks under the cover of a hen; you are protected and nourished (see Psalm 91, Matthew 23:37-38).
