Title: Grace for Rest
By: Daniel Peter
Date: 17.12.2022
There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.ย Hebrews 4:9โญ-โฌ10 KJV
In understanding spiritual truth, we must investigate by comparing spiritual things with the spiritual. Though God uses earthly things to describe spiritual realities, spiritual things are not earthly, therefore, are not limited by the possibilities in the natural.
The Bible recorded that it took God 7 days to create the earth. For six days, God created by speaking things into reality. While on the 7th day, God rested (Gen. 2:1-2). In the narration of the creation account, the first 6 days of creation ended with a similar statement: “And the evening and morning were the first day (Gen. 1:5,31). The only day that wasn’t closed with that statement was the 7th day, indicating it has no start, nor ending. It’s a day that perpetually exists.ย
Therefore, despite Adam being created on the sixth day, he was to function in the 7th day. Meaning, He was to do his activities from the place of rest. However, due to sin, Adam fell from the state of rest into hard work (Gen. 3:19). Because of Adam’s fall, men needed to struggle for survival. Toiling and labour were introduced to humanity. The goal of God, simply because of His mercy, has been to restore man into that rest (Matt. 11:29). That day, the 7th day, still exists in God. The writer of Hebrew stated: “There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his (Heb. 4:9-11)”.
At the cross of Calvary, Jesus said “it is finished (John 19:39)”;ย the work ended. When we believe in the finished work of Christ (the Gospel), we receive grace to enter that rest. In that place of rest, our labour ends. In that place of rest, we don’t struggle to be rich, for we believe that by His poverty we have been made rich (2Cor. 8:9). We are never sick, for by His stripes we were healed (1Peter 2:24). In that rest we don’t break curses, for the blessings of Abraham have come to us (Gal. 3:14).
