There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.ย Hebrews 4:9โ€ญ-โ€ฌ10 KJV

Yesterday, I highlighted believing in the truth as a way to access grace for rest. Today, I will give yet another key that is needed to access this reality in Christ.

Rest means to “cease work or movement in order to relax or recover strength”. Man was created to function from the place of rest, as his assignment was in the Garden of Eden which was already finished by God. By the fall of man, because of disobedience, Adam was removed from that place of rest, and was made to work the ground from where he was made (Gen. 3:23). Now, the last statement Jesus made at the cross was “it is finished (John 19:30)”, which brought a rememberance of what scriptures recorded of the 7th day at the creation “By the seventh day God had finishedย the work (Gen. 2:2)”. Therefore, as we believe the Gospel (the finished work of Christ), we are ushered into the place of rest.

For believe to be revealed as faith, it must be followed up with some corresponding actions. Grace is obtained by faith (Eph. 2:8-9). To see the actions that show believe as faith, let’s consider the life of Abraham. When God promised him a child at his old age, the bible records that “Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness“. However, Abraham’s believe was revealed as faith when he obeyed the instruction to sacrifice his son (Gen. 22:2). Therefore, obedience to instructions is a means by which our faith is revealed.

James said, “Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds (James 2:18)”. Our deeds reveal our faith. As we obey, in a radical manner, the instructions of scriptures and that which the Holy Spirit gives to us, we are brought into that place of rest, where our labour ceases (Heb. 4:10).

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help all come into His sabbath rest.
