And he said to them, โ€œIs it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?โ€ But they were silent. Mark 3:4

Yesterday as I pondered on what to write for devotion today, nothing specifically came to mind. I joined a fellowship this morning, and as we were discussing the word of God, the Holy Spirit gave this message. The verse for today was one of the verses in the passage we read. Going about His daily business, Jesus entered the synagogue and saw a man with withered hands.

It was Sabbath, and the Pharisees looked at Him closely to see whether He would heal the man, which He did. I believe the Pharisees should have rejoiced with the man knowing he has been healed, however, they went away and plotted to kill Jesus. In healing the man, Jesus reiterated that in the face of grace, the law does not stand. He showed the man with withered hand grace and mercy instead of obeying the legalities of the law.

By healing on the Sabbath, as He did with the woman who was bent (Luke 13:10-17), Jesus proved that grace supersedes the law. Left to the Pharisees alone, the man should have continued to suffer from the sickness. As believers, we have been graced. We have enjoyed the gift of the grace of God. What then should we do? We should also give grace. We ought to show compassion. Lest we forget, we have been given the grace to be gracious to others too.

Prayer Point:

Let us thank God for the abundance and sufficiency of His grace upon our lives. Let us pray for a compassionate heart to be gracious to others too.
