Title: Grace to be Humble

And it came to pass, that when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking unto all the people all the words of the Lord their God, for which the Lord their God had sent him to them, even all these words, Then spake Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: the Lord our God hath not sent thee to say, Go not into Egypt to sojourn there:
Jeremiah 43:1โ€ญ-โ€ฌ2 KJV

The scriptural verse of today deserves a context to it. Shortly after the Babylonians defeated Israel and installed a governor over the land, there arose a rebel called Ismael, who was sent by the Ammonite King to kill the Israeli governor installed by the Babylonians. He also killed some Babylonian soldiers left in the land by Nebuchadnezzar. Fearing the wrath of the Babylonians, the remaining Israelites thought of going to Egypt for refuge. However, they decided to seek the opinion of God and asked Jeremiah to inquiry from Him on my their behalf. They made a promise to be obedient

After ten days, Jeremiah came with a word, and it wasn’t God’s will for them to go to Egypt. God wanted them to remain in the land. Now, this word from God was against the natural expectation, for with the natural eyes, Egypt was saver than Israel at that time. However, my emphasis is the fact that in the scriptural verse of today, the Bible addressed those who rejected God’s word through Jeremiah as proud men. To more clearly state it, rejecting God’s word is a sign of pride.

What causes people to reject the word of God? For the Israelites, they thought Jeremiah was deceiving them. Again, there is yet another reason. When Jesus Christ was teaching the disciples about humility (Matthew 18: 1 -5), He emphasized that they should receive whoever He sends (with a prophetic word, a revelation, or an instruction etc), even if that person is a child. Why did Jesus use a child as an example? He did so because a child can be easily despised. In essence, Jesus was saying that we should not use the appearance of a person to judge if we should accept a word or not.

For the Israelites in today’s scripture, they proceeded to Egypt, however, God sent the Babylonians to war against Egypt and they defeated them. The subject of humility can be a subject of life and death. We all need to be careful.

Prayers Point:

Let’s take time out today to ask God to give us, and all mankind, the grace to be humble.

God bless you all.
