โ€œAnd Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.โ€
โ€” Luke 2:52 (NIV)

In the natural, every life form has its growth process, as none is born fully mature. This is also true of our spiritual lives, because the moment we gave our lives to Christ, we began a journey of spiritual growth.

Although a child is fully human, the level of responsibility we expect from a child is different from that of an adult. A child depends on parents or guardians; therefore, a child cannot lead or function as an heir because their decisions cannot yet be trusted. In the same way, even though we are heirs of God and blessed with all spiritual blessings in Christ, there are certain dimensions of our inheritance we cannot access until we grow spiritually. God cannot entrust these things to spiritual infants.

Furthermore, while a fully mature Christian is considered spiritual, an immature Christian is considered carnal and prone to sin. When Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian church, he said, โ€œAnd I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christโ€ (1 Corinthians 3:1 NKJV). This shows that there are certain conversations God cannot have with us if we are immature, because we cannot handle them.

From the above, the necessity of spiritual growth is evident, and we must all desire it. Though being a child is not a sinโ€”Jesus Himself began life as a childโ€”remaining a child is displeasing to God, because maturity is required for fruitfulness. Just as in the natural, growth requires food, and for the believer, the โ€œfoodโ€ is the Word of God.

Milk is essential for the early stages of a childโ€™s development, but eventually, milk becomes insufficient for complete growth. Likewise, while we should desire the sincere milk of the Word at the infancy of our faith, we must move on to the strong meat of the Word for full maturity. This โ€œstrong meatโ€ refers to the word of righteousness, as described in Hebrews 5:12โ€“14.

This word of righteousness is also called the word of His grace in Acts 20:32, where it is described as the word that builds us up. It reveals righteousness as a gift, and this gift produces in us the natural desire and the ability to do what is right (Philippians 2:13).
