He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe…
Ephesians 4:10 (NIV)
After His death and resurrection, Jesus Christ commissioned His disciples to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). His intent was that the peoples of the world would be brought into obedience to the faith (Romans 1:5). For this to happen, the nations need to be influenced into making that decision.
Influence is the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or somethingโor the effect itself. For us to make disciples of all nations, we must grow in our influence. From the statements of Jesus Christ and the things written about Him, we can see the relationship between heights in the spirit and the extent to which one can influence. For example, He said, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me” (John 12:32 NIV). That is, the influence to affect the behavior of all men will come when He is lifted up (rises above the earth).
Again, Apostle Paul wrote of Him, saying, “He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe…” (Ephesians 4:10 NIV). The reason He ascended to the highest heaven was so He could have an effect (influence) on the whole universe. Therefore, to grow in our influence, we need to rise in the spirit. Jesus Christ rose by humbling Himself and becoming obedient unto death (Philippians 2:8); we must do the same if we are to rise in the Spirit.
Your area of rising and territory of influence may differ from another’s, but the principle is the same. Apostle Paul thought he would be more effective in ministering to the Jews because they knew who he was before his conversion, but God sent him to the Gentiles (Acts 22:18โ21). And although Peter was the first to preach the Gospel to the Gentiles, his ministry was mainly to the Jews.
As we submit to God by being obedient to His spoken and written word, He increases our influence.
