20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”  Matthew 28:20

Have you ever felt like God is far away from you? Have you ever cried out “God where are you, why don’t I feel your presence”. Perhaps you are experiencing a difficult situation and it makes you feel like maybe God does not really care about you that much. Or felt like perhaps He is not really concerned about your wellbeing. Well, Your feelings might be right ; does not mean that you are right. 

Yes I have to admit that I too I have had those kind of feelings. But we live by the word of God, by faith and not by sight nor by feelings (Matthew 4:4). Sin separates us from God but Jesus died for our sins which means the obstacle is removed when we believe in Jesus. Just as it is written:

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”. Hebrews 4:16

If one is coming to obtain mercy it means they have sinned, so that debunks the idea that you need to be in your best moral conduct before you can approach God. Although it is still true that “…without holiness no one will see the Lord”(Hebrews 12:14), through Jesus we access God’s throne to obtain His grace to be Holy. In other words, Jesus grants us access to God’s throne under the permission of His Holiness in order for us to then obtain grace to be Holy. 

However, the main message today is not that we are to draw near to God even when we fall short but that even when we feel disappointed and downcast by no fault of ours we should know Jesus is near and encourage ourselves with His word. 

As God has decided in His own infinite wisdom, He is pleased by faith. So when you feel like God is far, you are to rather recall what the word of God says and believe. “…I am with you always….” Mathew 28:20. We are to encourage ourselves with the word of God like King David did (1 Samuel 30:6). This means remembering the word and telling yourself (faith) what it says. Other actions involve worshiping God, praising Him and giving thanks. Then I bet you will feel that presence as you insist on your faith. 

Prayer Point: 

Let’s pray that we continue to abide in the word of God so that we always remember what He says and not fall into or continue dwelling on discouraging, doubtful or lonely feelings.
