Date: 25.06. 2024
By: Daniel Peter
โฌโฌ When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. 2 A man with leprosy[a] came and knelt before him and said, โLord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.โ
Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. โI am willing,โ he said. โBe clean!โ Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.
Matthew 8: 1- 3 (NIV)
Love is the very foundation of the Christian faith. It’s the very nature of God, and by it, we make profit in the kingdom ( 1 Cor. 13:1-3). Despite its importance, very few Christians practice it with intentionality. The more we know the importance and benefits of love, the more intentional we become in our practice of it.
Compassion, which is a product of love, is the key that unlocks the healing stream. The scripture says “โญโญwhen Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick (Matt. 14:14)”. The healing was a result of the compassion that He had for them.
One of the best expressions of the healing power of love was seen when Jesus Christ healed the leprous man, which was recorded in Matthew 8. Leprosy is a contagious disease. As a result of this, people with leprosy are separated from society, and no one makes physical contact with them. When he reached out to Jesus for healing, the Bible recorded that “Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man (Matt. 8:3)”. Touching a leprous man wasn’t necessary, as he could have just declared healing over him. However, with that touch, the Lord was expressing love to the man, who had faced rejection from people. After this touch, He commanded him to be healed, and he was healed.
Love in itself is curative; people are more likely to recover or be healed when people around them show love to them in their situation. An example of this was the healing of the paralyzed man recorded in Matthew 9: 1-8. The faith Jesus saw that triggered the healing was not his faith, but that of the men who brought the paralysed man (Matt. 9:2). This faith was a product of love for the man who was paralysed, expressed by their effort to see him healed. To what extent do we go to see the needs of others met? are we only concerned about ourselves?
The centurion whom Jesus acknowledged to have the greatest faith (Matt. 8:10), was not seeking healing for himself or his child, but for his servant. How many people will go the extra mile to see their servants healed? His great faith was a result of his great love, for faith works by love (Gal. 5:6).
As Christians, we should seek grace from God to excel in love. We are only like God when we love like Him (Matt 5:45).
