Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory.   Romans 8:17 NIV

The link between sonship and servanthood is similar; like servants, sons serve the interests of the father of the house. The difference between sons and servants is that while servants receive wages, sons are not paid wages but are heirs of all the father owns.

In the Old Covenant, the children of Israel related with God as servants, and the rewards of their service were a fraction of the blessings they manifested as wages. It was as though they were paid for their labour in the law (the work of the law). For us in the New Covenant, though rewards still exist, we have been made heirs of God—heirs of all He is and all He has. However, this does not mean we do not serve.

Paul wrote to the Colossians, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:23–24 NIV). This confirms that though we are sons, we obtain our inheritance through service.

While wages are in fractions, the inheritance is the whole—God Himself. To be an heir of God is to be an heir of His character, power, and prosperity, and our access to these things is not limited. Sons who do not serve are considered reprobate, and they are denied access to their inheritance. But those who yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit and endure chastening are approved as sons and qualified for the blessing.

Prayer Points

Let us thank God for His word today. Let us ask Him to help us serve Him with all our hearts, knowing He rewards us with the inheritance we have in Him.
