For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee. [8] In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer.( Isaiah 54:7-8 KJV)

The character of the Father of the prodigal son in Luke 15:11-32 is that of a man who loves his children dearly and will go to great lengths to show them. One of such display of love is in correction and discipline. Discipline is an art and when well administered, will produce great results. However, it can be painful when the person going through the process is a loved one. Imagine how painful it was for the man knowing the only way to help his son was through the hard way.

If the Father of the prodigal son had told him he was making a costly mistake, he would never have listened at that point and the best thing to do was to allow him stumble so he can be picked up because by then, he would have fully understood the consequences of his actions. When he did, the fatherโ€™s arms were already wide open to receive him. The pains and troubles he went through was not to make him feel lesser, but rather make him better. When you are genuinely in love, you are merciful.

As believers walking with the Lord, one of the signs of growth into maturity is when He starts correcting us through discipline. It is part of the forging and chiselling of our character and obedience towards Him. When we think we are spiritually stable, we tend to relax and then the enemy begins to sow little seeds that look insignificant but can lead to a slippery fall. Examples are pride, lust and all manner of things we โ€œthinkโ€ we can handle without the help of the Holy Spirit.

However, in His mercies, He will try to stop us from falling into such error by warning us through different means. If peradventure we fall, He allows us go through the chastening but for a moment and when we genuinely acknowledge our wrongs and turn to Him, He will be there waiting to receive us in love because of His enduring mercies.

Prayer point:
Letโ€™s thank God for His word. Letโ€™s pray that His arms of mercy will sustain us so we donโ€™t fall and for everyone going through chastening, that His grace will keep them and bring them into His loving arms again.

God bless you!
