And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. [23] And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. (Acts 12:22-23 KJV)

The present human society functions in a hierarchical manner. You will observe that decision-makers at the top of government are a selected few representing the interest of a vast majority of people. This is the first classification between the leaders and the led. However, among the leaders of every institution, there are also strata of hierarchy as we see in the Army of David where some are captains of hundreds and captains of thousands (2Sam. 18:1).

These categorisations are put in place for the sake of administration, orderliness and civil conduct. There is therefore a tendency for human worship for those in the higher class because they are more likely to be honoured and revered by those in the lower cadres of leadership or followership because of the level of influence they wield and the resources at their disposal to get things done.

In the kingdom of God, every man has access to the Father through our Lord Jesus Christ. The Ministry of the Five-fold is there to facilitate this access and knowledge of God unto all men. Honour must therefore be separated from worship. Men can be honoured but God alone deserves the worship of His people and this should not be given to any man. The consequences of human worship were adequately presented in our opening text.

For every man in a position of authority, it is important to always ascribe the glory to God when men praise you for what God has done and never assume in your heart you are worthy of this status like we saw King Nebuchadnezzar did and was humbled into the animal kingdom for seven years before restitution and acknowledging the greatness of God (Dan. 4:30-34). The acceptance of worship from fellow men is an invitation from the spirit of pride which always goes before a fall (Pro.16:18).

Prayer point:
Let us thank God for His word today. Let us ask God for the Spirit of humility to always ascribe Him the glory at all times.
