My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
(Jas 1:2-3 KJV)
There are times in our walk on earth that can be daunting because of the trials and temptations that we may have to endure. This is an experience that is common to all humans, but for us Christians, there are scriptural truths that can help us live above the storms God allows our way.
The non-discriminatory nature of trials and temptation was clearly expressed in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. Despite He being God, He was tempted in every way as us (Heb. 4:15), and He had to learn obedience by suffering notwithstanding His perfection and sonship (Heb. 4:8). So, none is exempted; the righteous nor the wicked, the evil nor the good. But the victory that we have over them as Christians is hinged on the victory Christ had over them. Therefore, the first key on how to endure during trials is to believe in Jesus.
The redemptive work of Christ is beneficial to us as Christians because of the law of substitution. By this law, His life, death, and resurrection are accounted to us, for it is assumed by God that we were in Him the whole time (1 Cor. 1:30). Therefore, before God, we are already victorious over the trials and tribulations of life. Believing and living by this truth imparts the grace to endure whatever comes our way, for we overcome by our faith (1 John 5:4).
Another vital truth that can help us endure and manifest our victory over the trials of life is to know that He is with us. Several times in the scriptures, we see our God keeps repeating โI am with youโ to His servants (Gen. 28:15, Isa. 41:10). This was the same thing our Lord Jesus Christ told His disciples before He ascended (Matt 28:20). The reason God wants us to know that He is with us is that, we may experience seasons of life that will suggest that God is absent, but by knowing and receiving by faith this truth, we gain the needed strength to endure whatever comes our way. This was the key to Jesusโ victory, for David prophesied about Him saying โI have set the LORD always before me; Becauseย He is at my right handย I shall not be moved (Psalm 16:8)โ.ย For him to sayย โI have setโย is suggestive of the fact that He had to do it by faith.
The last key I will give today is that we should see the glory ahead. All through scriptures, we see how God takes people through processes that looked opposite to what He promised them. He Abraham had to endure childlessness despite He was promised to be a father of many nations (Gen, 17:4), the Israelites had to pass through the wilderness despite the promise of a land flowing with milk and honey (Exo. 3:8). Joseph was a slave in Egypt despite he saw himself as royalty in his dream (Gen. 37:5). In all of these, God came through for them. Spiritually, the way up is down. This is why Jesus Christ had to descend first before He ascended (Eph. 4:10). So when we pass through trials, we should see the glory ahead, just like Jesus, for the Bible states thatย โBecause of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honour beside Godโs throne (Hebrews 12:2)โย ย
