The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. ย โ€” Luke 22:63 (NIV)

In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. โ€” Matthew 27:41 (NIV)

When speaking to His disciples, Jesus Christ said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.โ€ (Luke 9:23 NIV). The cross represents all we need to endure as a result of obeying or following Jesus Christ. This is the same suffering Jesus Christ endured when He obeyed the Father. For those who have been called to manifest His glory, it is required of them to share in His suffering (Romans 8:17).

When Jesus suffered, He was mocked by both the religious leaders and the soldiers who crucified Him. This was despite the fact that He did no wrong. Like Jesus, there will be seasons when God may allow us to be mocked. This can be a very painful season, as those who mocked Jesus were the same people He taught and healed. Many times, our mockers are not those who are far away, but those God has helped us to be a blessing to. Like Jesus, we must learn how to handle such situations.

When Jesus was mocked, there was no record of Him being offended or responding to those who mocked Him. Like Him, we should keep our hearts from offense and entrust all judgment to God โ€” “When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly.โ€ (1 Peter 2:23 NIV). Jesus could have confronted His mockers and told them how wrong their actions were, but He didnโ€™t. We, too, must learn to ignore.

When David was running away from Absalom, Shimei, who was related to King Saul, came out to taunt David, cursing him as he and his soldiers fled from Absalom (2 Samuel 16:5). One of the soldiers volunteered to go kill him, but David stopped him and said: “Leave him alone; let him curse, for the Lord has told him to.โ€ (2 Samuel 16:11b NIV). Then, He went on to say, โ€œIt may be that the LORD will look upon my misery and restore to me his covenant blessing instead of his curse today.โ€ (2 Samuel 16:12 NIV). Sometimes, God may allow people to mock you because He wants to show you mercy โ€” because their mocking will make Him act quickly to turn your situation around.

Mockers are limited in knowledge and are blind โ€” they donโ€™t see what God is doing through the situation He has allowed you to endure. So instead of offense, we should pray for God to have mercy on them, which was what Jesus Christ did at the cross of Calvary โ€” “Jesus said, โ€˜Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.โ€™โ€ (Luke 23:34 NIV).

Thereโ€™s glory ahead, so endure the shame. Those who are mocking you now will have no option but to celebrate you when God elevates you to glory. Be encouraged!
