โWe do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.โ
โ Hebrews 6:12 (NIV)
God has a pattern of declaring the end from the beginning. He does this in His relationship with His children. Usually, He will tell you that which is to come โ about yourself, the nations, and organisations. However, not everyone sees these promises fulfilled. This is not because He is not faithful, but because we have a role in the manifestation of the word โ a role in which many of us fail.
Some years ago, I met a friend whom the Lord told he was going to be a missionary in Trinidad and Tobago. He was shown his role in the End Time army. However, he suddenly passed on without being sick, not leaving the shores of his country and other aspects of God’s promises to him not being fulfilled. Clearly, he did not inherit the promises.
According to Hebrews 6:12, the two criteria for inheriting a promise are faith and patience. While faith involves believing that which was said to you by God and obeying the instructions He gives along the way, patience speaks of enduring under difficult circumstances โ waiting for His words to be fulfilled. God allows protracted, difficult seasons to prepare us for when His promises will be fulfilled.
For example, after Joseph had a dream, it took about thirteen years for him to begin seeing the promises fulfilled. Before the word came to pass, scripture records that โthe word tested himโ (Psalm 105:19). He endured being a slave and prisoner in a strange land after being betrayed by his brothers, who initially wanted to kill him. Joseph did not lose faith during his trials. Scripture records him interpreting the dreams of others even in unpleasant situations (Genesis 40:1โ23; 41:1โ57), and demonstrating the fear of God when he refused Potipharโs wifeโs offer for sex (Genesis 39:7โ20).
Faith isnโt just believing in the heart but also obeying His instructions. The Israelites who failed to inherit the promise of entering the Promised Land were those who sinned and died in the wilderness as a result of Godโs judgement (Hebrews 3:17โ19). God established His promises to Abraham when he obeyed the instruction to sacrifice his son โ and He affirmed his fear of the Lord (Genesis 22:12โ18). Many believers miss it at this point.
We have a responsibility in seeing promises fulfilled โ to have faith in Him and demonstrate our faith through obedience to both His written and spoken word. This obedience includes using our gifts even when the situation isnโt pleasant, as Joseph did. And we are expected to be patient until the end of the trials that the Word brings.
Prayer Point
Letโs thank God for His word today.
Letโs ask Him to help every believer inherit His promises to them.
