Some years ago, I spoke with a lady about the need for her to be an intercessor. The moment I mentioned it, she became triggered and responded angrily, saying, “What about me? I have needs and desires. Why should I be praying for someone else?” (paraphrased).

I was appalled by her response and surprised at how deeply a person’s desires can be exalted above the will of God.

Our relationship with God is not primarily about getting our desires met, but about doing His will. A “me-first” mindset makes us unproductive in the faith. In fact, we cannot truly fulfil the instruction, “Love as I have loved you,” if we are not selfless—because only a selfless person can lay down his or her life for another.

A person who lacks selflessness cannot fulfil ministry, because ministry is fundamentally service to others. While a selfish person is focused on having their own needs met and desires granted, a selfless person seeks to know the will of the Father and to do it. Such a person is compassionate toward the needs of others.

Those who believe everything is about them often treat God as a means to achieving their personal desires. Their interests become their god, esteemed above the will of God. While a selfless person can leave all and follow Jesus, a selfish person cannot.

Although God truly cares about us, His dealings in our lives are not solely about us. Through us, He desires to reconcile the world to Himself. This purpose can only be fulfilled when we become Kingdom-minded and not self focused.

• Let us thank God for His Word today.
• Let us ask God to help us become selfless, prioritising His will above our own interests.
